Evening 10s Rd 7, LWCC 30 and racing round-up

Behind the visiting Pete Morris (TMC Race Team) Joe Benians was once again the cream of the home-based crop in Round 7 of Lewes Wanderers’ 10-mile time-trials on the Evening of Monday 14th June.  His time of 21 minutes and 14 seconds was only just behind the former-Wanderer, but almost 2 minutes ahead of the tussle behind.

Out of which Dan Street (23:05) just got the better of Duncan Fuller (23:10); Gavin Richards (23:16); Peter Baker (23:28); Mike Hannay (23:43) and Tom Moss, who achieved a massive personal best in 23:55; 48 seconds better than he had previously recorded.

11th placed Kate Parrish was just 5 seconds outside her PB, but fastest of the two competing females ahead of Kate Thomas (13th in 25:26) and the sole competitor, and thus victor, in the fixed wheel event - Ed Tuckley who was 10th in a fine 24:42.

In 12th place and 4 seconds behind Kate Thomas, but more importantly 8 seconds inside his PB was Graham Faultless, while 16th placed Paul Harris (26:09) improved by 5 seconds on his previous mark.

The day before Nick Dwyer had been up in Cambridgeshire for the Veteran Time Trials Association 50-mile Championship (promoted by Cambridge CC).  If he hadn’t taken the wrong exit at one of the many roundabouts he might well have made the top four.  As it was his time of 1 hour 44 minutes and 49 seconds was good enough for a superb 6th place from the 103 finishers.

Closer to home on Saturday 12th June Darren Haynes was 37th from 53 in a time of 38 minutes and 35 seconds in the Sussex Cyclists Association 15-mile event.

Peter Baker and Anya Tamplin (Hunt Bike Wheels) were back at the Preston Park outdoor velodrome on 18th June for the latest round of the Sussex Cycle Racing League Friday Summer Circuits.  Peter finished a lap down in 20th out of 21, but Anya beat the other 11 competitors to the line in her 40-minute race and in doing so gained enough qualifying points to move up a category for future races.

Nick Dwyer was back in action the following morning as he and his daughter Anna (Drag2Zero) were competing in an Alton CC/Owens Cycles 10-mile event near Farnham.  Anna’s time of 23 minutes and 12 seconds gave her third place on the podium amongst the 8 female competitors and 31st overall, while her father’s excellent time of 20:15 was only good enough for 4th.

Back in Sussex on the same day and over the same distance Joe Benians and Darren Haynes were taking part in a Horsham CC event near Steyning.  Joe was a fine 5th from 49 in 21:06, while Darren didn’t help his cause by missing his start and adding roughly 45 unnecessary seconds to his time of 25:14 leaving him 34th.

Vince Busk by Richard Burchett

Come the following morning Joe Benians was up in Derbyshire for the Matlock CC 25-mile time-trial.  Despite the long drive and racing the day before he recovered well enough to beat his personal best for the distance by over a minute and place 5th of the 18 finishers with a time of 55:10.

Meanwhile four of his clubmates were competing in Lewes Wanderers’ 30-mile Championship on roads much closer to home.  New Club Champion was Gavin Richards in 7th overall in 1 hour 12 minutes and 27 seconds.  Two places and 48 seconds behind was Peter Baker, while Neil Edwards placed 18th of the 22 finishers in 1:22:09.

One of the non-finishers was Vince Busk who had the misfortune to puncture on the wet roads after 25 miles.  Fortunately for him he was at a junction where one of his friends and clubmates was marshalling and was able to lend him an inner-tube so he could at least avoid a 5-mile walk.
