Evening 10 Round 6

Lewes Wanderers series of 10-mile time-trials for 2026 concluded on Monday 3rd August with the event that should have been run on 6th July, but had to be postponed due to a fallen power cable affecting the course.

The prospect of this being the last occasion that budding racers could see what power they could lay down brought them out in their droves as a bumper field of 28 riders took to the start line at the top of The Broyle from 7:30pm onwards.

There may have been “weight in numbers”, but there was no stopping the irresistible force that is Calum Elms as he triumphed for the 7th consecutive event with a rapid time of 21 minutes and 23 seconds, just 4 seconds outside of his personal best.

He was pushed hard by George Bentley (Sussex Revolution VC) who also took runner-up in the road bike class with 21:52.  Third overall and winner of the TT-bike category was Richard Burchett with 23 minutes dead.

Fourth overall and third on a road bike was Chris Hurcomb who broke 24 minutes for the first time when recording 23:55, 18 seconds ahead of 5th placed Dan Street.

Runner-up in the TT-bike category was Thomas Bowden (Eastbourne Rovers CC) with 24:50, while Peter Baker took third with 25:22. Ben Gregory was fourth on TT machinery with a time one second inside 26 minutes, with Olivia Webb fifth, just two seconds behind him.

Webb was also the fastest of the half-a-dozen women competitors. Her nearest challenger was Maddie Jackson (Eastbourne Rovers CC), who was 16th overall with a superb 26:23, just five seconds behind Paget Cohen. Erica Martin (Eastbourne Rovers CC) was third fastest woman and 21st overall with 28:05, while Emma Simpkins was fourth fastest and 23rd overall with 29:19.

Back in the overall standings, Neil Edwards took 8th place with 24:51, while Richard Brazier was 10th in 25:23, taking 28 seconds off his previous PB. Darren Haynes was 11th with 25:37, just five seconds quicker than Gareth Ormerod.

Nick Miles was 18th with 27:08, while David Padwick recorded the third personal best for the host club, improving by 25 seconds to record exactly 28 minutes for 20th overall.

Bruce Samuel took 24th in a time of 30:51 at his first attempt, while David Wilkins was 26th with 32:19.

Brighton Mitre 10

Not content with his work on Monday night Calum Elms was back out the following evening when he was again victorious, beating 20 others around a vaguely rectangular course in the Wineham/Cowfold area with a time of 22 minutes and 11 seconds.

David Padwick and Emma Simpkins were also back in action with David recording 28:21 for 17th and Emma 29:47 for 19th overall, 4th fastest woman; 3rd on a road bike.

East Grinstead CC 10

Further east on the same night Peter Baker was covering 10-miles of Surrey lanes in the Smallfield area in 31 minutes and 13 seconds for 13th place from 14 starters.

SCRL Track League

Peter Baker continues to be a regular competitor in the Wednesday night Sussex Cycle Racing League Track League at Preston Park Outdoor Velodrome in Brighton.

On 22nd July in “Race 11” Peter came 4th from 5 in the Scratch Race, 5th from 10 in the Elimination, 3rd from 5 in the Points Race, 3rd from 4 in a second Scratch Race and 6th from 10 in the Block Handicap.

Race 12 took place on 29th July when Peter was 8th from 9 in the “Australian” Pursuit and recorded the same result in the Dash.

On 5th August in “Race 13” he was 8th in the Scratch Race, 7th from 9 in the Accumulated Points and 3rd from 6 in the Dash.
