LWCC Hill Climb

Lewes Wanderers’ annual Hill Climb took place on the evening of Monday 27th July on the fearsome slopes of Firle Beacon.  The double-digit gradients and blustery wind didn’t deter twenty-three aspiring polka-dot jersey wearers travelling from far and wide, including Switzerland, to take part.

Daniel Pink (Bigfoot CC) returned to defend the title he has held for the past two years with a time of 4 minutes 29.27 seconds, but he was pushed close by Lewes Wanderers’ Calum Elms with a superb 4:45.09 and Steve Coomb (Sussex Revolution VC) with 4:51.64

The visiting Swiss Max Grass took fourth place with 5:06.33 on a fat-tyred gravel bike!

Runner–up among the dozen competing for the host club was Chris Hurcomb in 7th overall with 5:28.45 ahead of the evergreen Peter Baker (8th in 5:45.25) and fastest woman Olivia Webb with a tidy 6:04.91

Wanderers packed the middle of the standings as event-promoter Neil Edwards went off first and set the benchmark 6:12.36 which eventually placed him 10th.  Paget Cohen was 12th with 6:19.97, just ahead of the man who started a minute ahead of him Darren Haynes (6:24.92).

David Padwick (6:52.37) was 14th just ahead of Emma Simpkins (6:59.03) who was second fastest of the six women racing, just ahead of Maddie Jackson (Eastbourne Rovers CC) with 7:06.43.

Steve Barry took 19th with 7:43.72, while David Wilkins recorded 9:11.99 for 22nd and Bruce Samuel completed the result sheet with 9:50.48

SRVC Hilly

Back on Saturday 25th July Pater Baker was joined by a Baker’s Dozen of other racers as Sussex Revolution VC held a hilly time trial on the Ashdown Forest.  The course was almost identical to that used by Lewes Wanderers for their Circuit of Danehill TT except that it began and finished in Nutley due to roadworks in the village preventing a free-flowing event.

Peter covered the 18.11 miles in 49 minutes and 34 seconds to take runner-up in the TT-bike category and 9th overall.

A3crg Goodwood 10

Richard Burchett joined a throng of keen “TTers” down at Goodwood Historic Race Circuit for the latest a3crg 10-mile event of the summer.  Richard’s time of 22 minutes and 17 seconds gave him 3rd from 20 in his age group, 21st among 64 on TT machinery and 28th from 149 overall.
