Three of our present-day trophies belonged to the original Lewes Wanderers and were reclaimed by Des Terrill from a John Dunning, at Newhaven. They were the Pearce Cup (25 Championship), the Crisp Cup (100 Championship) and the Cinema De Luxe Cup (12 hour). Dick Whittington visited Strudwick's bike shop in Brighton in September, 1950 and persuaded the owner to donate a trophy for our 50 mile championship (The Strudwick Cup); and Des Terrill's father handed over two of his boxing trophies which he'd won in 1926 - The Terrill Cup for the 25 handicap winner and a Terrill Cup for the Lewes-Newhaven event (now Newhaven Beddingham). Des Terrill himself was working at the home of a Mrs. Kent in Seaford when he came across a big green and dirty cup, lying in a cupboard. It had belonged to Mrs. Kent's late husband, who had been an MP and yachting enthusiast. Mrs. Kent had the cup cleaned and engraved as the Kent Cup for Best All Rounder. |

The Classic League Shield is awarded on a points basis to the club member who has the best placings in a number of selected time trials on 'sporting' (or damned hard) courses. In 2008 points will be allocated according to finishing positions in the following ten events:
Points are scored for finishing in the top 20 in each event i.e. a 1st place is worth 20 points; 2nd place is worth 19 points down to 1 point for 20th. Riders finishing outside the top 20 do not get any points.
The Short-Distance Best All Rounder Competition was introduced by the Club in 1998 and won by Shane Faulkner at an average speed of 26.702 mph (21m23s 10; 56m16s 25 & 1h58m10s 50). All events must be on Sussex courses. There was no trophy for the 1998 event. When Shane won again in 1999 at an average speed of 26.617, he became the first holder of the Dan Leaney Trophy. This new trophy was presented to the club by Brian Leaney, whose father, Alfred (nicknamed 'Dan'), was one of the founder members of Brighton Excelsior CC in the early 1930's. Brian (also nicknamed 'Dan', like his father), was the Excel's BAR in 1949-50 and held several Sussex records on road and track. Brian says he gave the trophy to not only remember his father but to pay back into Sussex cycling some of what he gained through a very friendly and successful membership of the Brighton Excelsior CC. Peter Baker won the trophy in 2000; 2001; 2002 and in 2003 at an average speed of 25.43 mph. Mark Winton interrupted Peter's 21st Century domination by winning the trophy in 2004. Jim Cheek won in 2005 with a new Club Record time of 27.387 mph (21m23s for 10 miles; 53m34s for 25 miles & 1h54m56s for 50 miles). Mark Winton won the competition for a second time in 2006, with an average speed of 27.112 mph and completed his hat-trick of wins in 2007. His average speed was 27.294mph. To date Peter Baker is the only winner who has also won the Club BAR (1994; 1995 & 2000). | |||||||
