Senior Best All Rounder Competition for The Kent Cup

The Club BAR is decided on average mph over 50, 100 miles and 12-Hours. The 50 and 100 must be based on Sussex roads. It used to be based on 25, 50, 100 miles and 12-Hours. The Committee dropped the 25 in 1999 to bring the competition in line with the National BBAR comp.

The Kent Cup was awarded to John Adams, our first BAR in 1952. Derek Agg holds the record for most wins, with six, whilst John Mankelow is just behind, currently on five wins. Tony Deacon with 23.359mph, had held the Club BAR Record since 1984 until Tom Glandfield set a new Club Record of 23.967mph in 2010 with 1:55:31 for 50 miles, 4:05:04 for 100 miles and 257.360 miles for 12-Hours. Tom won again in 2012, but at a slightly lower average speed than he achieved in 2010.

Short Distance Best All Rounder Competition for The Dan Leaney Trophy

A new Short-Distance Best All Rounder Competition over 10, 25 & 50 miles was introduced in 1998 and won by Shane Faulkner at an average speed of 26.702 mph (21:23 for 10 miles; 56:16 for 25 miles & 1:58:10 for 50 miles). All events must be on Sussex courses. There was no trophy for the 1998 event.

When Shane won again in 1999 at an average speed of 26.617, he became the first holder of the Dan Leaney Trophy. This new trophy was presented to the club by Brian Leaney, whose father, Alfred (nicknamed 'Dan'), was one of the founder members of Brighton Excelsior CC in the early 1930's. Brian (also nicknamed 'Dan', like his father), was the Excel's BAR in 1949-50 and held several Sussex records on road and track.

Brian says he gave the trophy to not only remember his father but to pay back into Sussex cycling some of what he gained through a very friendly and successful membership of the Brighton Excelsior CC. Brian is no longer a member of the Wanderers, but the Leaney name is kept alive by his two brothers, Laurey & Ashley who are both active supporters of the club.

Peter Baker won the trophy in 2000; 2001; 2002 and in 2003 at an average speed of 25.43 mph. Mark Winton interrupted Peter's 21st Century domination by winning the trophy in 2004.

Jim Cheek won in 2005 with a then new Club Record time of 27.387 mph (21:23 for 10 miles; 53:34 for 25 miles & 1:54:56 for 50 miles). Mark Winton won the competition for a second time in 2006, with an average speed of 27.112 mph and completed his hat-trick of wins in 2007 averaging 27.294mph. Mark continued his short distance dominance with victory in 2008 at 27.250mph and in 2009 at 26.496mph.

Nick Dwyer stepped up in 2010, winning in a new Club Record time of 28.248 mph. Nick won again in 2011, improving on his 2010 time with a new Club Record performance of 28.852mph (19:37 for 10 miles; 52:50 for 25 miles & 1:49:51 for 50 miles).

To date Peter Baker is the only winner who has also won the Club BAR (1994; 1995 & 2000).

Ladies Best All Rounder Competition for The Secretary's Cup

The Club introduced the Woman’s best all rounder competition in 1991. The September 91 Committee meeting was told that a trophy (Secretary’s Cup) was to be provided by a member who wished to remain anonymous. I’m not sure about the name, could be construed as a little sexist in our 21 Century enlightened world! The qualifying criteria for the new comp was average speed over two rides at 10 miles and two rides at 25 miles, all rides must be on Sussex courses.

The first winner was Heather Stevens at 21.312mph; the runner-up was Sandra Weller who averaged 20.015mph. Heather won again in 1992 at an average speed of 21.898 and got married to fellow Wanderer, Robert Wimble in Jan 93. Under her new surname, she dominated the competition for the next three years. 93 average 21.899; 94 average 22.861 & 95 average 22.673.

After 1995 we didn’t have any qualifiers for the competition until 2001. Somewhere between 95 and 01 the qualifying criteria was changed by the Committee (at the time of writing this, I can’t find any reference as to when?) to a 10, 25 & 50 mile ride (all on Sussex courses).

Janet Homewood won under the new criteria in 2001 & 02, with Liz Lumber winning in 2003. We then had a gap until 2006, when Debbie Evers took the trophy at an average speed of 20.498mph. Debbie repeated her victories in 07 at 20.926 and 08 at 20.720. Helen Millier stepped up in 09 at 21.432.

In 2010 we had, to date, the most competitive battle for the Ladies BAR - with four riders qualifying and the top three separated by the closest margin. Naomi set a new Club Record of 22.176mph and to show how close it was, Natasha Fuller was second in 22.108 and Helen Millier was third in 22.096. All three girls bettered Helen's previous record set in 09.

Natasha took the trophy in 2011 and in the process set a new Club Record of 22.510mph.

Veteran Best All Rounder Competition for The Veterans' BAR Tankard

The Veterans' BAR Tankard was first awarded in 1986 and is won by the rider gaining the best mph 'plus' on VTTA age standards over 25, 50 and 100 miles. Nick Dwyer's +5.954mph set a new Club Record in 2010, beating the previous record of +4.824mph set by Ron Rogers in 2003. Nick set another new Club Record in 2011 with a +6.510mph.

Junior Best All Rounder Competition for The Junior BAR Cup

The Junior BAR Cup was first awarded in 1977 and is won the best performances by a Junior rider on two rides at 10 miles and two rides at 25 miles, all rides must be on Sussex courses.

Alan Curtis set the current Club Record of 26.377mph in 1996, with 21:10 & 22:07 Tens and 58:48 & 59:38 25s. We didn't have any qualifyers between 2000 & 2007. Tom Baker won in 2008 with 20.316mph, 2009 with 21.813mph and again in 2010 with 25.016mph. With Tom leaving the Junior ranks, Callum Middleton steeped up to the plate for 2011 and took victory at an average speed of 25.006mph.
