Chris Lord has thrown down the gauntlet to Shane Faulkner and Dave Pollard (The establishment) for the position of the fastest short distance time trialist in the club. He has a 22m13s Ten in Sussex (Brighton Excel Club 10 on the 20th May) and on Thursday the 1st of June he recorded 55m00s in a Brighton Mitre evening 25, finishing fastest ahead of Steve Woodbridge. Chris still feels that there is more to come. Like Shane, Chris does not like longer distances, they will both have to bite the bullet and ride a decent 50 if they want to stop Dave from winning the Club short distance BAR. With Pete Roberts sidelined with an injury and Alan Curtis focusing on Road Racing it should be a good scrap between Chris, Shane and Dave over the rest of the season. May the best man win!
Norwood Paragon CC 50 miles on the 30th May
A good ride by Dave Pollard in not easy conditions. Chris Martin overslept (first time ever. Honestly!) and missed the event.

A stiff southwesterly wind greeted the riders on a cool and overcast morning. Shane Faulkner was our fastest rider, starting at no. 100 out of a full field of 120. Chris Lord lost time with several minor mechanical problems, including having to stop after about ten yards to adjust his rear wheel! Horry reported going off course! (how many times have you ridden this course Horry?). Peter Baker starting at No. 2 on a very smart new 'Giant' time trial bike had completed his ride and gone home before most of the other Wanderers arrived.

Another good result for Shane Faulkner when he finished second in the Worthing Excelsior 25. Only Michael Hutchinson, who finished second in last weeks National Ten was faster than Shane. Chris Martin and Peter Price completed the very hard Redmon Hilly over a bruising 74.5 miles. At the same time as the above time trials, various club members were involved in the 111 miles plus Red Ride. The mass participation event was run over the same course as the pro riders will use on stage two of the Prutour on 24th May. Ian Landless reported on having an enjoyable day spending over six hours on the bike. On route he met up with Phill King and Richard Meed who both completed the event. Each of the 1162 riders were given a red Prutour top which made for some difficulty in recognising the riders. Other riders from our club included Paul Cooper & Steve Chittenden. Helping with marshalling the event and manning the feed station at Maresfield were: Tony Gale; Brian Leaney; Mick & Sylvia Burgess;
Michael & Megan Rabbetts; Geoff Baker; Peter Gates & Stuart Maddock. Times: John Mankelow 5h53m; Ian Landless 6h25m; Nigel Siberry 6h45m; Richard Meed 6h51m & Phill King 6h51m.

Danehill Hilly 18.5 Miles on the 9th May Shane wins in new course record |
On yet another fine morning Shane Faulkner broke his own course record (set in 1997) by 13 seconds. Shane seems to be finding some good form after not being at his best in his early season events. Paul Hunt beat Chris Martin for the runners up position by 8 seconds. Fourteen year old Stuart Maddock won the handicap award on this his first time trial. Ian Landless turned over Ron Rogers to win the vets standard award.

Sussex CA 25 miles Team Championship on the 2nd May Wanderers miss out on hat trick! |
Chasing a hat trick of victories the Wanderers were knocked into second place by the GS Stella team. The fastest four riders out of a team of six count for the competition, we lost out by 2m07s. Dave Pollard finished second overall and Shane Faulkner was fourth, Dave said that today was the best he had felt this year, Shane is still a little way off his best. Chris Lord put in a good ride as our third counter. Chris Martin was disappointed with his effort as he blew on the return, which was hard work for all the riders. Paul Hunt had problems with his bars working loose. Bob Luck was the sixth member of our A Team and Horry was our only other entry. Again the best Lewes team available was not on show. As consolation there is a cup and S.C.A. medals for the second finishing A Team.
