July Round-Up

Our rider of the month was Graham Seymour, the improvements on his PB times at 10 & 25 miles were remarkable. As most of us seasoned campaigners know you do not normally make vast improvements in PB's unless you are just starting out in the sport or you are young. What ever it is that Graham's on, I know quite a lot of us want some! Ron Rogers completed the full set of short distance vets standard records. I've got him thinking about trying a 12 hour next year, he told me that he has never been over 100 miles in a time trial. Dave Pollard had yet another winning month and must now be hot favorite to go one better than last year and win the ESCA BAR. Sean Yates made a second appearance in our evening ten series, this time on a good night and he showed us mortals just what is possible with a 19m30s.

Peter Baker won the series and the handicap award with Mark Winton in second place, Hugh Proctor was second on handicap.

ESCA & Club 100 Miles Championship
on Sunday the 18th July
Dave marches on towards the ESCA BAR

On a very hot and still morning Dave Pollard finished a distant second overall and retained his Club 100 Championships His PB ride won him the Roy Humphrey Cup as fastest ESCA rider and virtually guaranteed him victory in the ESCA BAR competition. Peter Baker was the second Wanderer home after a good ride also in a PB time. Chris Martin struggled all the way round and was shattered afterwards, he was at least pleased to have also finished in a PB. The event was excellently promoted by the Wanderers with many club members turning out to help marshal, run the feed stations and generally support the riders.

Graham Seymour put 48 seconds into his 10 year old PB and then tried to blame it on his new state of the art no expence spared time trial machine! All our riders enjoyed the conditions to record good times. Shane Faulkners time helped tighten his grip on the club short distance BAR.

Dave Pollard was not much pleased with his first man off (No. 1 start number). Dave had to get up at 3am. Shane was off nearly two hours later at No. 111. Dave had requested close starting times for the two Wanderers! Dave and Shane's Sussex star status obviously doesn't carry much weight on what many consider the fastest 25 mile course in the country (H25/13B). Both Shane and Dave failed to improve on Chris Lord's fastest time (54m28s) over 25 miles this season.

Circuit of Earwig 19.25 Miles
on Thursday the 1st July

Paul Hunt retained his Earwig Championship on a blustery evening beating scratchman Peter Baker (who had recovered from his '24 Hour' adventure) into second place. Trevor Wright picked up the first handicap award and habitual lantern rouge Mick Burgess finished second on handicap. Ian Landless continued his good run of form by claiming the vets standard award.

June Round-Up

June was a good month for club records with four new marks being set Dave Pollard broke the club 25 mile championship record; Ron Rogers added the vets 10 record to his existing 25; 30 & 100 records. Ron only needs the 50 to complete his domination. Chris Martin took the '24 Hour' record to over 438 miles and Tony Gale set the mark for vets standard in the same event.
On the short distant front Chris Lord did the fastest 25 (54m28s) of the year (set outside Sussex).
The club short distance BAR is down to a two horse race between Dave and Shane, with Shane just holding a narrow advantage going into July.
Sean Yates rode our evening Ten on the 28th in 20m10s that's virtually 30 mph average and he did it in damp and very blustery conditions.

on Thursday the 24th June
Dave wins again with a
New Club Championship Record

Dave Pollard continued his domination of club championships, breaking Pete Robert's 25 mile championship record set in 1993 by 30 seconds. Peter Baker was an excellent second two days before he sets out to ride in the National '24 Hour'. Mark Norman was first on handicap and Ian Landless continued his recent good form winning the vets standard award.

ESCA & Club 50 Miles Championship
on Sunday the 20th June
Dave crashes and still finishes second
only beaten by Sean Yates

On a horrible wet and very windy morning, when 20 riders out of a field of 61 did not start, Dave Pollard finished second and retained his ESCA and Club 50 Championships. The event was won in style by Sean Yates (who is not eligible for the ESCA Championship as his club 'Team Clean' is not affiliated to ESCA) Dave had a nasty fall at Kennel Corner, but being the hard man that he is, he remounted and went even faster than before over the last 15 miles. Back at the HQ with blooded thigh, leg and hand, Dave looked like one of the many pictures of the pros that you see in Cycling Weekly after they crash! For the mortal members of the club it was a matter of getting round and finishing, Chris Martin was just glad to finish in one piece after a few scary moments with the cross winds and the biggest scare of his time trialing life when he was nearly sucked under a Tesco's artic!

Club 30 Miles Championship
on Sunday the 13th June
Dave wins in new course record

On a cool damp overcast morning Dave Pollard added The Lewes Wanderers 30 mile Championship to his growing list of victories. In a time that broke the course record by 39 seconds held previously by ex Wanderer John Limpus, Dave also finished fastest on vets standard and second on handicap. A disappointing low number of entries meant that only eight Lewes riders started the event. Chris Martin ended up as best of the rest also winning the handicap award.

Southern Counties CU 50 miles
on Sunday the 13th June

Shane Faulkner completed the fastest Sussex 50 of the year by a Wanderer, beating Dave Pollards effort on the Norwood Paragon 50 by 15 seconds. This result gives Shane the edge in his battle to retain the club short distance BAR. With the Bognor 50 (the only other Sussex 50 left) clashing with the ESCA 100. Dave will have to choose between the two (ESCA BAR or Club Short Distance BAR? decisions, decisions!)
