Click on 'A few words' for more info on our 2005 success stories. I have managed to get most of the results this season onto the website as I intended (some a bit late)! Next year I will endeavour to repeat the service and am always appreciative of reports, articles, times etc. And if you have photos please send them to me (electronically if possible), as I can't keep asking Paul Wright to give me his pictures and not pay him for them. With modern digital cameras it is a lot easier to get shots, so do we have any budding photographers out there, who could snap some of the Club events next season? Enjoy the winter training and hopefully I'll see you next season.
2005 ESCA Points Competition
Jim Cheek also won the ESCA BAR

Sussex CA Hill Climb (GH/92) on Saturday the 5th November
Report from Mark Winton: With Jim not entered, getting the team prize would be a long shot, but we made it look easy in the end. Two riders tied on time for the climb up Steyning Bostal (Tony Reeves and Tim Mardall); fuelled by egg, bacon and sausage baps I was pleased to finish just 2 seconds behind to take third, especially as both these riders took 30 seconds out of me on the same climb earlier in the month. Peter Barling, his bike repaired from the Catford event was the next Lewes qualifier, just beating Andy Cox - who was complaining he had to work that morning - I don't think the McDonalds big breakfast helped either. Star of the day was Felix English who stormed up the climb to finish 1st juvenile - shame he wasn't rewarded for his excellent ride at the prize presentation. It was great to see the Lewes taking the team prize and even better to see that we could have relied on Felix' time and still taken home the winnings. At the prize presentation my name was first out of the hat for a spot prize, so I grabbed a can of GT85 and handed it to Felix as his prize for winning the Juvenile event. Next name out of the hat? Yeap, it was Felix who took another can of oil and gave it straight back to me. All in all an excellent event and the forecast rain held off all day, with a vicious head wind Jim Henderson's Record was never in danger. Now - what am I going to do with this form I have finally found?

National Hill Climb Championship
Report from Jim Cheek: The pictures on RTTC website don't quite show the suffering that I was going through, or the gradient involved - 25% for the last 300 yards, except for the bit at the end where it levels out. Great event, though. You've got this guy reading out info on a tannoy at the start which he is making up from the start sheet info he has - 'here we have John Cheek, fast man on the G courses, all the way up from the seaside resort of Lewes on his first hill climb of the season!!' 'That's not true' I muttered under my breath 10 seconds before the off to the time keeper! As you get further up the hill they close the road off (because it turns off into the Rake - 25% section) and they have another bloke on a tannoy commenting on your performance as you pass him - a weird experience that sort of spurs you on!
Total Entry: 150 Riders + Reserves Fastest Rider: Ben Greenwood

Jim takes his fourth Club Record in 2005
Jim Cheek slaughtered the course record by 2 minutes and 39 seconds! Felix English claimed a few scalps at the tender age of 12 - fortunately his father Bruce saved face by getting 'round 30 seconds faster. Hugh Proctor returned from injury with a very respectable time that won him 1st handicap. Many thanks to Richard Mead for timekeeping, Sandra Hill & co for teas and all other marshals and assistants. September belongs to Jim Cheek, complete with new skinsuit and disk wheel. In winning the ESCA 10 and 25 he became the first Wanderer to win an Association event since Dave Pollard won the Sussex CA 50 back in June 1999. His 53m34s in the Southern Counties 25 is the fastest 25 by a Wanderer since Shane Faulkner did a 53m17s in the Oxford City RC 25 back in July 1997. To cap it all he rounded off his Classic League campaign with maximum points (ESCA 25) and the highest points total ever recorded.
East Sussex CA 25 miles
Report from Graham Jeffs: ESCA 25 was on an alternative course G25/86E due to road works on the A22 at Uckfield. The course was basically the Circuit of Earwig with a bit of the Gentleman's GP course and was quite hard although conditions were very good. Jim Cheek won with an excellent ride of 55m05s, beating Steve Dennis (56m17s) by over a minute. Jim passed me and he was flying.
Total Entry: 80 Riders Fastest Rider: Jim Cheek
East Sussex CA 10 miles (G10/87)
Report from Mark Winton: On a very cold morning Jim Cheek rode his new skin suit and new disk wheel to his first Open Win. Jim set a new PB over our standard 10 course at East Hoathly of 21:23 in far from ideal conditions, 44 seconds clear of second place. All this despite oversleeping!! I was disappointed with my time but pleased to find I had finished 7th. Peter Barling continues to improve and finished 25th
Total Entry: 66 Riders Fastest Rider: Jim Cheek

Southern Counties CU 25 miles (G25/53) on Sunday the 11th September
The fastest 25 ride of the year by a Wanderer
Mark Winton writes, Well, I knew he was going quick (55min on the tough Steyning course the week before) but 53m34s is one of the fastest and most awesome 25 rides by a Wanderer for a long time - fact (probably!!) - Jim was only beaten by Laurence Harding in the Southern Counties Cycling Union. Other Wanderers: Spencer Coleman 61st - 1h06m25s. Mark Winton - DNS (Didn't get out of bed)
Total Entry: 100 Riders Fastest Rider: Laurence Harding
Sussex CA 25 miles (includes SCA Championship) Ladies 25 Club Record & More Team Prizes!
Report by Mark Winton After a 45 min delay (fog) and on what I find to be a very tough course at Steyning, (I just cant seem to work out where to go hard and where to ease off), Ruth Elliott set a new Ladies 25 Club Record of 1h02m38s. As well as taking the record Ruth finished first lady beating second place by over 13 minutes and 22nd overall. Jim Cheek scorched round the Course in 55m24s to finish 4th. The Wanderers also claimed 2nd fastest A team (based on fastest 4 riders): Jim Cheek, Mark Winton, Peter Baker & Stephen Elliott and fastest B team (based on next fastest 3 riders): Ruth Elliott, Spencer Coleman & Adrian Hills. As a club this has got to be a very successful morning.
Total Entry: 58 Riders Fastest Rider: John Sharples
